UCLA Westside Pavilion

Everything you need to know about the UCLA Westside Pavilion acquisition

The UCLA Westside Pavilion acquisition was made public on Jan. 3, 2024. In a letter to the Bruin community, Chancellor Gene Block announced that the university planned to transform the former mall into a research and innovation hub called UCLA Research Park. Chancellor Block’s statement is available on the UCLA Chancellor’s website, linked through the button below.

Westside Pavilion, a 700,000-square-foot property, two miles from the Westwood campus, was once a popular retail location but declined over the past decade. According to UCLA Newsroom, the UCLA Westside Pavilion will give the location new life, housing the California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy at UCLA and the UCLA Center for Quantum Science and Engineering, as well as other programs across several disciplines.

According to the chancellor’s statement, the Westside Pavilion buildings will be converted into flexible work areas. The former mall also includes a 12-screen multiplex movie theater that can be used for lecture halls or performance spaces.

The UCLA Westside Pavilion acquisition follows two other expansion projects: UCLA South Bay and UCLA Downtown. The campus expansions are designed to help the university meet its 2023–2028 Strategic Plan goals of deepening its connections to the city of Los Angeles and serving the common good through its top-tier research institutions.

The acquisition was made possible by several entities and donors: the state of California, which intends to invest $500 million in the property, with $200 million already allocated; a group of founding donors from the biotechnology, academic, entrepreneurship and philanthropic communities led by Meyer Luskin, Dr. Gary Michelson, Dr. Eric Esrailian, Dr. Arie Belldegrun, Sean Parker and Michael Milken; and Google, which had previously leased part of Westside Pavilion.
