Los Angeles, Calif., July 10, 2024 – The Daily Bruin advanced its legacy for award-winning journalism on June 28, taking home seven winnings from the Southern California Journalism Awards for its outstanding student reporting.

Professional news outlets and college newspaper teams alike attended the 66th annual Southern California Journalism Awards ceremony on June 28 at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel, hosted by the Los Angeles Press Club. Of its seven awards, the Daily Bruin was honored with one organizational award and six individual awards, some of which were in direct competition with non-student publications.

“It’s such an incredible honor to have received seven awards by the Los Angeles Press Club,” said Lex Wang, Daily Bruin editor in chief. “This is truly a testament to the talent and tenacity of our staff.”

The Daily Bruin, one of the many student-run publications operating under Associated Students UCLA (ASUCLA) Student Media, accepted first place for the Best College News Website organizational award. The second winning award was presented to Daily Bruin News Editor Dylan Winward for Best Feature Writing in the Campus Issues category for “In Plain Sight: As students sleep, UCLA bakeries turn on the ovens.”

In second place, the Daily Bruin was honored with Best News Writing in the Campus Issues category for “UC community members call for systemic change, action against caste discrimination,” by news senior staffer Shaanth Kodialam; Sports Commentary for “Nelson’s Noggin: Having found a true star in Fangran Tian, UCLA women’s tennis can maximize future,” by former sports senior staffer Jack Nelson; and Editorial Cartoon for “Carnival house,” by UCLA alumnus Samia Saad.

And in third place, the Daily Bruin was awarded with Page Design for “Rivalry Issues Spread,” by former design director Helen Quach and Best News Photo for “Angelenos take to streets of downtown Los Angeles in May Day march to City Hall,” by UCLA alumnus Shengfeng Chien.

"Congratulations are definitely in order to the phenomenal journalists who won these awards and the Daily Bruin's leadership team who oversaw the newsroom,” said Doria Deen, Student Media director. “As the director of Student Media, I am beyond blessed and privileged to work with award-winning, talented, bright and amazing students every day. I am thrilled that the LA Press Club was able to recognize the Daily Bruin's accomplishments."
