Los Angeles, Calif., April 17, 2023 – The time has come once again for UCLA student artists to put their best piece forward and enter the Associated Students UCLA (ASUCLA) Art in the Union contest. Entries are now being accepted in-person at the ASUCLA Student Union information window located in Ackerman Union, A-level, until April 28 by 5 p.m.

Art in the Union aims to unearth and showcase the talent and diverse backgrounds UCLA students possess for all to appreciate throughout the ASUCLA Student Union. Up to three winners will be chosen to receive a $600 prize and have their original work displayed in ASUCLA Student Union buildings for all to experience for years to come.

“The artwork you see throughout Ackerman Union and Kerckhoff Hall represent the winning pieces of previous Art in the Union contests and we can’t wait to see what awe-inspiring creations our students are planning to submit this year,” said Mary Romo, ASUCLA Student Union programming manager.

UCLA students, including those enrolled in UCLA Extension, are eligible to participate in Art in the Union. Acceptable submissions include original paintings, sculptures, photography, pottery, textiles and graphic illustrations. Pieces requiring electrical equipment or batteries are not permitted.

The Art in the Union selection committee consisting of student representatives from the Cultural Affairs Commission, ASUCLA executives and staff, and Mrs. Carol Block will vote on the unique student-made artwork displayed between May 1-8 in the Kerckhoff Art Gallery. Members of the UCLA community are invited to view the different art pieces during this time.

The winning artists will be notified on May 9 and a reception held by the ASUCLA Student Union is planned for May 11 in the Kerckhoff Art Gallery between 4-8 p.m. to formally recognize the students behind the creativity.

In its history, ASUCLA has commissioned up to five original works by UCLA students annually since 1972, selecting winners from as many as 150 applicants. ASUCLA has more than 60 pieces of original artwork hung across its facilities of Ackerman Union, Kerckhoff Hall, North Campus Student Center and LuValle Commons.

The 2022 Art in the Union contest awarded three outstanding pieces, including “Introspection” by second-year microbiology, immunology and molecular genetics student Jaden Ji, “The Afterglow” by first-year computational biology student Jennie Pham, and “Looking Outside the Box” by second-year neuroscience student Hannah Pon.
