What GPA is required for UCLA

GPA and other factors in the UCLA admissions process

What GPA is required for UCLA? The UCLA Admissions website lists no minimum GPA requirement for incoming freshmen. In fact, a student’s GPA is weighed as one factor along with other considerations like special talents, awards or accomplishments and meaningful insights when answering the personal insight questions.

Incoming Freshman Requirements

UCLA has a highly selective admission process, so it is understandable that students would want to know what GPA is required for UCLA, or at least know what grades they should aspire to. According to UCLA Admissions, the average unweighted GPA for incoming freshmen is about 3.95. However, as mentioned above, a GPA is only one factor and does not solely determine admission into UCLA.

The only academic requirement listed on the UCLA Admissions page for incoming freshman applicants is the completion of 15 A-G courses with at least 11 courses finished prior to the beginning of their last year of high school. Below is a list of the A-G requirements:

  • Two years history/social science

  • Four years of college-preparatory English

  • Three years of mathematics (four years recommended)

  • Two years of laboratory science (three years recommended)

  • Two years of language other than English (three years recommended)

  • One year of visual and performing arts (if available)

  • One year of college-preparatory elective

Note that in order to be competitive in the UCLA admission process, applicants should challenge themselves with classes beyond the minimum UC admission requirements. For more information about applying as an incoming freshman, click on the link below.

Transfer Requirements

While UCLA Admissions shows no GPA requirement for incoming freshman applicants, it does list a requirement for transfer applicants; according to UCLA Admissions, applicants must have a GPA of 3.2 or higher earned in transferable courses. Beyond what GPA is required for UCLA, transfer applicants must also meet the following academic requirements:

  • Junior-level standing (60 semester or 90 quarter transferable units completed) by the end of the spring term before transferring

  • Completion of the following course requirements by spring prior to transfer:

    • Two transferable courses in English composition or critical thinking and writing

    • One transferable math course that has a prerequisite of intermediate algebra or higher

    • Four transferable college courses in at least two of the following subject areas: arts and humanities, social and behavioral sciences, physical and biological sciences

Like freshman applicants, academic performance is not the only factor; personal factors like employment while attending school and involvement in campus organizations and community service will be taken into consideration during the admissions process.
