UCLA’s new downtown Los Angeles hub

The UCLA Trust Building, also called the UCLA Downtown property, was acquired in June 2023 as part of a larger series of acquisitions strengthening UCLA’s ties to the Los Angeles area. According to a UCLA Newsroom article, the Trust Building will house 31 new programs, which are slated to begin operating in 2024 and 2025.

According to the UCLA Newsroom article, the UCLA Downtown Programming Committee selected programs for the new location to focus on promoting community engagement and cross-campus collaboration. The programs coming to the Trust Building will address topics including:

• Climate change and environmental justice

• Education for incarcerated individuals

• Labor and employment

• Housing and homelessness

• Immigration

• Public health

• Voting rights

• LGBTQ issues

• Criminal justice reform

• The history of Los Angeles

• Community-focused arts and cultural projects 

The 31 programs selected by the committee are only the first of many to begin operations at the UCLA Downtown location; according to the UCLA Newsroom release, a request for proposals to institute additional programs at the location will be issued in late 2024.

The location of the historic Trust Building will augment the programs’ focus on the Los Angeles community and public issues that the city faces, like housing and homelessness. The property is located on South Spring Street in downtown’s Historic Core, making locations like City Hall, Skid Row, the Twin Towers Correctional Facility and key historical archives conveniently accessible for learning, research and service.

Aside from the UCLA Trust Building, UCLA has also acquired two other properties: UCLA South Bay in Palos Verdes and the UCLA Research Park, formerly the Westside Pavilion shopping mall.
