Preparing for the study abroad application process at UCLA

The UCLA International Education Office (IEO) provides important resources for students interested in joining a UCLA Study Abroad program, including information on application timelines, opportunities the various programs offer, webinars and more. The following information is from the UCLA Study Abroad website from the UCLA International Education Office

Choosing a program

When considering a UCLA Study Abroad program, the IEO notes that it is important to narrow down the study abroad goals a prospective student of the program may have, including program experience, costs, term abroad and destination of the desired program. The IEO also provides a list of questions that can help choose the most fitting program for Bruins. To help start the initial process of choosing a program, click the link below.

Further preliminary resources from the IEO

  • Timeline: The IEO offers a timeline regarding when to apply for the study abroad programs. The office suggests to begin researching different programs between four to 12 months before being abroad. For future summer, fall and full-year terms abroad, applications and registrations open between October and November and close between December and April, before the particular program. For future winter and spring terms, applications and registrations open in January and close between May and September before the program. For more on the timeline, click the button below.

  • Webinars: To get familiarized with the various programs outside of the advising hours, the IEO offers pre-recorded webinars that Bruins can watch at any time. The IEO recommends starting with the “Study Abroad 101” pre-recorded webinar. For the full list of webinar videos, click the button below.

Contacting the IEO

It is also helpful to contact the IEO regarding a program(s) available to join. The IEO provides virtual and in-person advising hours with no appointment needed. There are different lobbies to join virtually depending on the particular question or program. For general questions, the IEO offers advising from Monday to Friday via Zoom.

For Italy, Spain or Latin America-based programs, the IEO offers advising on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday via Zoom, or in-person at Murphy, 1332. For UK, England and Scotland-based programs and inquiries, students can join IEO’s advising hours via Zoom, or in person at Room 1332, Murphy Hall.
