UCLA events to attend for AAPI month

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) month, which highlights the history and contributions of Asian Americans, native Hawaiians and Pacific Islander Americans. A great way for Bruins to celebrate AAPI month is attending a cultural night performance, a film screening or any other AAPI month event taking place on UCLA campus.

Cultural nights

Several AAPI cultural clubs put on cultural nights or cultural shows in May and each performance typically features singing acts, student-written skits and traditional dances. Some of the performances to look out for this month include Chinese American Cultural Night (CACN), Samahang Pilipino Cultural Night, the Hui O 'Imiloa Lu'au and the Iranian Culture Show (since Iran is located in west Asia, the Iranian Student Group’s show has been included in this list).

Note: this is not an exhaustive list of cultural night performances that take place at UCLA. For more information on a certain group’s event, check out the group’s Instagram page.

UCLA Asian American Studies Center (AASC)

A good place to look for AAPI month events to attend is the AASC website, which has an events calendar that features book talks, a symposium, film screenings and more. One of the events on the calendar, No-No Boy in Concert at UCLA, is an immersive concert experience telling Asian American histories through folk songs, sound pieces, live projections and storytelling.

Asian Pacific Islander (API) film night

Rounding out AAPI month is API film night, an event celebrating AAPI filmmakers from UCLA. The film screenings will take place on May 31 at 6:30 p.m. at James Bridges Theater and there will be a reception following the event.

This is not an comprehensive list of AAPI month events, so make sure to keep an eye out for other events from AAPI organizations on campus through their social media channels. To explore cultural clubs at UCLA, click on the button below. Have a great AAPI month, Bruins!
