Following UC Regents’ approval, UCLA is officially switching to the Big 10

The UCLA Big 10 move was approved by the UC Regents on Dec. 14, 2022, according to ESPN. UCLA will stay in the Pac-12 conference until the end of the 2023-2024 season, after which the university will officially join the Big 10 conference. The UC Regents’ decision came five months after UCLA initially announced its intention to leave the Pac-12 conference for the Big 10 in June 2022. Read UCLA’s official announcement below:

UCLA made the decision to switch to the Big 10 conference because ultimately a UCLA Big 10 partnership would bring more revenue for the university; according to Sports Illustrated, projected payouts approach $100 million per Big 10 school annually. Big 10 games have prime-time television slots, so more Bruin fans can tune into UCLA games. The new Big 10 deal will also allow UCLA to maintain its rivalry with USC, which also made the decision to switch to the Big 10.

Although the UC Regents approved the UCLA Big 10 move, the approval came with some stipulations.

According to ESPN, UCLA is required to provide between $11.03 million to $12.20 million in additional yearly resources for student-athlete support to address the impact of the Big 10 move on student-athletes. These resources include about $6.3 million for academic support, nutritional support and mental health services for all student-athletes. An additional $4.3 million will be for breakfast and lunch on campus for all UCLA athletes, professional dietitian services and nutritious meals while they are traveling.

The UC Regents may also require UCLA to provide a $2 million to $10 million subsidy to UC Berkeley. The official amount of the subsidy will be determined later in 2023 when the Pac-12 media deal is secured. The subsidy addresses the expected hit in revenue UC Berkeley will take in its Pac-12 media deal once UCLA and USC leave the conference.
