New Year’s resolutions

Happy New Year, Bruins! With a fresh start to the year, it is common for many people to make resolutions for the new year. Whether you follow resolutions throughout the entire year or not, the simple act of creating goals can provide hope and encourage growth in the new year. With that being said, keep reading for a list of resolution ideas, from students and for students!

Academic resolutions

As students, we are not only starting a new calendar year but also a new quarter. What better time to set goals for your academics! The following list may help shape your New Year resolutions in school.

  • Work on projects a week or two before they are due, rather than the night or two before the due date. Working on projects in smaller increments weeks before can help relieve stress.

  • Try and study little by little as the quarter goes on, rather than cramming for a final and reviewing everything the night before.

  • Check out some new libraries and study spaces on campus to help change up the atmosphere and focus.

  • Actually attend my professors’ office hours (note to self: I will follow my own advice this year, too!).

Recreational resolutions

Although we are busy students chasing degrees, it can be helpful to have fun and balance academics with recreational activities too! Here are some options for new things to try, if you haven’t done so already:

  • Check out UCLA Rec (Recreation) programs. From FitWell wellness programs, competitive club and intramural sports to aquatics and instructional classes, UCLA Recreation has a ton of budget-friendly options for the quarter.

  • Did you know the John Wooden Center has a rock wall? If you are focused on getting more active this year, UCLA has plenty of UCLA Recreation facilities to look into, including places to swim, practice tennis, run, work out and much more.

  • Recreational activities don’t always have to be active! If you are someone who thinks of extracurricular activities, rather than active recreational ones, try joining a club! For a full list of UCLA student organizations and clubs, click here

  • Consider attending Student Union programs that help to enhance your UCLA experience as a student! From relaxing at a Wellness Wednesdays event to listening to some Noon Tunes, there are plenty of events to attend. For more information, click here.

Miscellaneous resolutions

  • Focus on mental health and wellbeing priorities. This is a really big and important resolution! It is so important to take that first step in prioritizing mental health, and it is never too late to begin no matter what time of year! Click here for UCLA resources.

  • Try to get more sleep each night! Even if you cannot add several hours a night to your sleep schedule, going to bed at least thirty minutes earlier may help.

  • Check out more of Los Angeles if you are new to the area! Click here for some ideas.
