Holiday blues

The holidays have come and gone, and while they’re supposed to be the “most wonderful time of the year,” they don’t always feel that way. After weeks of finals stress and the whirlwind of the fall quarter, it’s normal to feel a little off once the break begins, and into the new year. Whether it’s the pressure to make everything picture-perfect or the shift from home to campus life again, the holiday blues can sneak up on anyone.

If you’re feeling it, too, you’re not alone. Here are some tips, from one UCLA student to another, to help you navigate the season and make the most of the return to school:

Take the pressure off

The holidays don’t have to be perfect! Ease into the winter quarter by focusing on what makes you happy — whether that’s binging Netflix in your PJs or catching up on sleep. It is natural to feel stressed and overwhelmed during school, so it is important to balance academics with other activities and breaks. Grab a sweet treat, head to a wellness event with friends on campus or catch some sun rays with a good book on the Janss Steps Lawn.

Stay connected

If you’re feeling lonely, try reaching out to friends or family. Didn’t go home this year? The Bruin community is here for you. Take some time to explore UCLA’s many clubs and student organizations to find an affinity group and hone in on your interests. While it can be daunting to look through so many options, the wide variety of clubs provides an opportunity to find the right niche for each student. Move your body

A quick walk around Westwood, the UCLA Botanical Gardens or a workout at Wooden or BFit can actually boost your mood

Ask for help if you need it

Don’t forget, the UCLA Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is here for you. Don’t hesitate to reach out — they’re just a message or call away, open to all UCLA students. To make an appointment with CAPS, click the link below.
