Celebrating our Bruin dads and their stories

A mother, father and two sons pose in front of UCLA's Pauley Pavilion. All of them are wearing black or blue UCLA merchandise.

Happy Father’s Day, Bruins! We want to show our appreciation for UCLA dads and father figures, whether they are student dads, fathers of current students or alumni with kids. You’re all pretty dad-mirable!

For Father’s Day, we’re highlighting the stories of two UCLA alumni dads. Read more for their fondest memories of UCLA and how they inspire current UCLA students.

Glenn Ogino (Class of 1979)

Glenn Ogino was a microbiology student (now the Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics major) at UCLA. He later went on to University of California San Francisco and is currently a pharmacist at a hospital. Glenn Ogino has fond UCLA memories of seeing free concerts for world-class musicians like The Talking Heads, Al Jarreau, Chuck Mangione and the Toshiko Akiyoshi - Lew Tabackin Big Band. He was ecstatic when his daughter Tracy (Class of 2024) was accepted to UCLA. His fatherly advice for current UCLA students is to study hard but try to make time to enjoy student life.

Khaliq Siddiq (Class of 1992)

Khaliq Siddiq went to UCLA from 1987 to 1992 and majored in psychobiology. He was a first-generation student and commuted from Torrance with his brother, who was working at UCLA at the time. He navigated the college environment with few resources available, and his story inspires his daughter Sakeena throughout her college journey at UCLA.

Khaliq was also involved in the Muslim community at UCLA, organizing advocacy events on campus and putting out issues of Al Talib newsmagazine, which prides itself on being the first Muslim-run student newsmagazine in the country. He was also president of the Muslim Student Association, where he met his future wife. Khaliq and his wife’s stories from college encouraged Sakeena to follow in their footsteps. She is now studying Human Biology and Society at UCLA, and she was president of the Muslim Student Association for the 2022-2023 school year.

Thank you, UCLA dads! Have a wonderful Father’s Day!
