Ackerman Union UCLA

A History of the Student Hub at UCLA

The Associated Students UCLA (ASUCLA) building, Ackerman Union UCLA, is one of the Student Union buildings on UCLA campus. Ackerman Union, as it is formally known, opened on April 3, 1961.

According to the UCLA Alumni association on Ackerman Union's History, Ackerman Union was built at the center of UCLA’s campus. The building was named after William C. Ackerman, the executive director of the ASUCLA Student Union, who helped facilitate the project to fruition. Not only was Ackerman involved in the student union, he was also the first head tennis coach of UCLA. Today, Ackerman Union UCLA still represents the student association, ASUCLA, and its many services and operations. The history of Ackerman Union UCLA relies on its goal to become the go-to building for UCLA students of the 1960s. With fun activities for Bruins to engage in, such as bowling, billiards and table tennis, as well as leisurely activities such as lounging, buying coffee and casual dining, the building became a highlight destination for students. Ackerman Union UCLA also has the Ackerman Grand Ballroom (AGB), a spacious ballroom venue for rental of various academic and organizational events on campus.

The several-year designing and construction of the five-story building is now the epicenter for ASUCLA, including the Undergraduate Students Association, Graduate Students Association, Student Media and Services & Enterprises offices. Now, the ASUCLA building has expanded to more services Bruins can use and enjoy while on campus. With reservation for event spaces, like the AGB, or opportunities to shop at the UCLA Store at Ackerman Union and the 13 restaurants, the legacy of Ackerman Union UCLA continues to be a highly-populated and foundational place for all student services and necessities at UCLA.
