Vote Center for 2020 Elections Coming to Ackerman Union

Westwood, Calif. – Feb. 19, 2020 – ASUCLA will be at the center of political innovation this election year as Ackerman Union is set to serve as an all-new Vote Center, where any registered voter in Los Angeles county can visit and cast their vote.

In a move designed to eliminate designation-based polling places and make voting more accessible, LA County is introducing centers that can be accessible by any voter, starting with the 2020 primary elections. Between Feb. 22-Mar. 3, voters within the Bruin community and beyond can exercise their right to vote by visiting the Vote Center, which will be in the Bruin Reception Room in Ackerman Union. The Hammer Museum will also serve as a 4-day vote center, Feb. 29-Mar. 2.

“ASUCLA is always looking for opportunities to not only enhance the student experience on campus but also to provide students with opportunities to actively engage in shaping their world,” said Pouria Abbassi, ASUCLA Executive Director & CEO. “We are proud to host the Vote Center in one of our facilities, and we encourage all members of the Bruin community to participate in civic engagement.”

Following a new law passed in October 2019, the Vote Center on campus will also offer same-day voter registration on-site, as well as mail-in ballot drop off.

The Vote Center comes to UCLA through the collaborative efforts of LA County Registrar’s Office, California Secretary of State’s Office, UCLA Government & Community Relations, Campus Life, Administrative Vice Chancellor’s Office, Chancellor’s Office, and Student Affairs.

UCLA joins a select group of institutions of higher education that will host vote centers but is the only 11-day vote center at a university in LA County. 4-date vote centers will also take place at CSU Dominguez Hills, CSU Long Beach, CSU Northridge and CSU Los Angeles. Local community colleges that will serve as 11-day vote centers include LA City College, LA Mission College, College of the Canyons, and others.

To vote in the primary election, residents must be registered to vote by Feb. 18. LA residents can check their voter registration status, register to vote and get more information about the vote center by visiting www.bruinsvote.ucla.edu.
