ASUCLA Executive Director Pouria Abbassi named recipient of Ellis Island Medal of Honor

Abbassi will receive this high honor on Ellis Island on May 14 as recognition for his commitment and service to the Los Angeles community.

Los Angeles, Calif., May 3, 2022 – For his tireless contributions and unwavering spirit to give back the community he has served throughout his distinguished career, Associated Students UCLA (ASUCLA) Executive Director and CEO Pouria Abbassi will receive the Ellis Island Medal of Honor at a ceremony in May.

As the Ellis Island Honors Society’s mission is summed up in the statement, “Immigration works for America,” this high honor is bestowed upon distinguished individuals who immigrated to the United States and have proven their commitment to serve their nation professionally, culturally and civically.

Speaking with the Public Affairs Alliance of Iranian Americans (PAAIA) recently, an April 28 story highlighted all Abbassi has done for his Los Angeles community and what it means to be a recipient of the Ellis Island Medal of Honor as an Iranian American.

“We need to do our part to make Los Angeles an even more inviting environment for those who are yearning to call this place home just as I did,” Abbassi told PAAIA. “It has been my honor to continue serving this city in any capacity that I have had. I truly believe there is no place on the globe like Los Angeles.”
