The UCLA Spanish placement exam may be taken at any time. The Spanish & Portuguese department recommends that students take the exam on campus to avoid computer compatibility issues. Once the exam is complete, the student will receive a recommendation for courses to enroll in.

Please note that there will be periods in the year where the exams are unavailable, so students need to plan accordingly. Check the UCLA Spanish & Portuguese department placement exam page for information on the UCLA Spanish placement exam availability.

There are two Spanish placement exams: one for students learning Spanish as a second language and one for first-language Spanish speakers. The corresponding links for each exam are available through the UCLA Spanish & Portuguese department placement exam page.

Aside from the Spanish placement exam, UCLA also offers Spanish exemption exams. Students who complete and pass the exemption exam will fulfill their UCLA language requirement

According to the UCLA Spanish & Portuguese department exemption exam page, the Spanish exemption exam is also available only in an online format and students will only have one attempt to complete the exam. The exam cannot be reset in the event of personal equipment or Internet failures, so students should make sure to take the exam on a reliable device and with strong Internet connection. Students are also required to use Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitoring to ensure that exams are taken honestly.
