Dunk’s journey to UCLA

In July 2021, UCLA Athletics announced their partnership with Nike Inc. to become the official brand for all UCLA Athletics footwear, apparel and equipment. This transition concluded a 15-year, 280 million dollar deal with Under Armour, which previously supplied gear to UCLA Athletics. UCLA's Alice and Nahum Lainer Family Director of Athletics Martin Jarmond explains the move from Under Armour to Nike in a statement on the UCLA Athletics website saying, “UCLA Athletics is elite and our student-athletes deserve every resource in their pursuit of excellence. We sought to work with the best in the world; that is Nike and Jordan Brand."

Since 2021, Nike has significantly expanded its presence in UCLA merchandise, offering a wide selection of products that go beyond traditional athletic wear. A prime example is the UCLA dunks, which are part of Nike’s Be True to Your School series of college colorways for its Nike Dunks in 2022.

Nike Dunks are a line of sneakers that debuted in 1985, initially designed for college basketball players. They quickly gained popularity for their distinctive high-top and low-top silhouettes, vibrant colors and durable design. Over time, Nike Dunks evolved beyond basketball, becoming a staple in both skateboarding and streetwear cultures.

First, there is the Nike Dunk Low Retro, which features a low-top silhouette with a leather upper, perforated toe box and contrasting color panels. These UCLA dunks are available in black and white, officially called panda, and rose and white, officially known as rose whisper

Another pair of Nike Dunks offered at the UCLA Store is the Nike Dunk Low Retro Premium. This shoe differs from just the Nike Dunk Low Retro as it has elevated detailing and added padding for more comfort. The Nike Dunk Low Retro Premium comes in various shades of green, officially called jungle green
