Spreading awareness for Heart Health Month this Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is all about hearts — so why not take a moment to check in on your own? February is Heart Health Month, and while college life at UCLA is full of excitement (and the occasional all-nighter), it’s easy to forget that our daily habits play a huge role in keeping our hearts strong

This blog is not intended to provide medical advice. From one student to another, this is meant to start a conversation on heart health and ways we can all improve overall wellness!

Sometimes it can be challenging for students to create healthy lifestyles. Between busy academic, social and work schedules, heart-healthy choices can take a backseat. But small changes can make a big difference. Take advantage of the UCLA campus — taking the stairs instead of the elevator or walking the scenic route to class. A UCLA Study reveals that more steps, just a few times a week, can boost heart health. In hand with staying active, sleep is crucial for a strong heart; therefore, be sure to let your body recover and recuperate overnight.

Nutrition also plays a huge role in heart health as research reveals that plant-based diets improve cardiovascular wellness. Associated Students UCLA (ASUCLA) Restaurants on campus offer a variety of healthier food options, such as Greenhouse, which has a rotating menu of salads, soups and international cuisine such as free range chicken piccata and Hawaiian garlic shrimp.

As everyone’s definition of “healthy” is different, there are also great nutritious meals to make at home such as overnight oats, orzo salad and more. To check out 60 healthy meal prep ideas, click here to get inspired. To explore all ASUCLA Restaurants, click the button below.

Lastly, don’t forget stress management — midterms and finals can be challenging, but mindfulness, deep breathing or a quick stroll through the botanical garden can do wonders for your mental and physical state. UCLA’s Ashe Center also has resources if you want to check in on your heart health and other health needs. To view the Ashe Center’s full list of services, click the button below.

This Valentine’s Day, show yourself some love by making choices that keep your heart happy!
