CCLE UCLA
The transition from CCLE to Bruin Learn
CCLE UCLA managed course materials and resources for instructors and students from Spring 2019 to Summer 2022. The transition to Bruin Learn, UCLA’s Canvas-based platform, began in Fall Quarter 2021. CCLE UCLA was officially removed from general public use on Friday, November 18, 2022, at 5 p.m. Pacific Standard Time.
CCLE stands for Common Collaboration and Learning Environment. CCLE UCLA was based on Moodle, an open-source learning management system (LMS), a web-based software that manages course materials and resources for institutions, instructors and students.
After two years of using CCLE, UCLA transitioned from CCLE to Canvas. Dating back to the winter 2022 quarter, most UCLA courses have been offered through Canvas. Official information about the transition was available on the UCLA LMS Transformation website, which is currently inaccessible. However, the website was cited in a Daily Bruin article, which states that the university turned to Canvas because it “offers more powerful tools to integrate Gradescope and Slack, leads the learning management system market and is better suited for UCLA’s future.”
Canvas also allows for smoother transfers from other institutions into UCLA, as Canvas is widely used among other University of California campuses, California State Universities, community colleges and high schools.
As UCLA transitioned from CCLE to Canvas, several courses on CCLE UCLA were copied onto Bruin learn, and courses that have not been copied into Bruin Learn have been archived. The Bruin Learn Center of Excellence and ITS will support requests to retrieve archived content for any course taught prior to Spring 2019. To request archived content, please complete the Bruin Learn – CCLE Archive Request.
Students and faculty can access their course materials through the Canvas portal using the link below.
