Attention Bruins: Entries now being accepted for Art in the Union

UCLA students are encouraged to submit original artwork to Art in the Union by April 28 for a chance to win $600 and have their work exhibited in ASUCLA Student Union facilities.

Los Angeles, Calif., April 15, 2024 – UCLA students, get ready to unleash your creativity in the annual Associated Students UCLA (ASUCLA) Art in the Union contest. Those interested have until April 28 by 5 p.m. to turn in their pieces at the ASUCLA Student Union information window located on A-Level, Ackerman Union.

Art in the Union is a yearly competition hosted by the ASUCLA Student Union that gives Bruins the opportunity to showcase their talent, creativity and hard work. Winners of the Art in the Union contest will receive a cash prize of $600 and have their original work displayed in ASUCLA Student Union buildings for all to enjoy for generations to come.

“Art in the Union is about celebrating creativity and fostering a sense of community through art,” said Pamela Lewis, ASUCLA Student Union Services director. “Student submissions are a vibrant reflection of our diverse talents and passions.”

UCLA students, including those enrolled in UCLA Extension, are eligible to participate. Acceptable submissions include original paintings, photography, textiles and graphic illustrations. However, pieces requiring electrical equipment or batteries are not allowed.

After the submission window closes, all original pieces will be displayed in the Kerckhoff Hall Art Gallery for the judges and the public to view, beginning April 29. The Art in the Union selection committee will consist of ASUCLA executives, Board of Directors members, and office members from the Undergraduate Students Association and Graduate Students Association. On May 6, the student winners will be notified, with a formal reception to follow in the Kerckhoff Hall Art Gallery on May 9 from 4-6 p.m.

The Art in the Union contest has been a yearly tradition since 1972, commissioning up to five original works by UCLA students each year from as many as 150 applicants. These works can be seen across the ASUCLA facilities of Ackerman Union, Kerckhoff Hall, North Campus Student Center and LuValle Commons.

The 2023 Art in the Union contest awarded four outstanding pieces, including “Release” by community health sciences graduate student Jang Lee, “To the Powell Cat” by third-year mathematics student Erin O’Neil, “Sleep Deprived Dreamer” by materials science and engineering graduate student Harshit Ranjan, and “Veil” by third-year microbiology, immunology and molecular genetics student Hannah Pon.
