Actress Jameela Jamil Visits Ackerman Union at UCLA as Part of Speaker Series
Westwood, Calif. – Dec. 10, 2019 – The Ackerman Grand Ballroom was certainly a “good place” on Tuesday night, as actress Jameela Jamil opened up to UCLA students about her acting and modeling career, activism and current events as a part of the CEC Speaker series.
Best known for her role as Tahani Al-Jamil on NBC’s “The Good Place,” TV show, Jamil took part in the moderated Q-and-A conversation in front of hundreds of UCLA students. She gave her thoughts on working in TV as well as current hot-button issues such as “cancel culture,” and also gave students advice on how to advance their own activism. Jamil also talked about “I Weigh,” a campaign she launched in 2018, promoting body neutrality amongst women.
“It’s very important to protect your mind,” Jamil said during the discussion. “I call this self- defense of the mind. We teach ourselves how to protect our bodies, but we never know how to protect the way that we feel about ourselves.”
The Campus Events Commission (CEC) brought Jamil to UCLA, the latest in a speaker series that has also included visits from actress Rachel Bloom, YouTube platform Jubilee Media, YouTuber Cody Ko, fashion mogul Michael Kors and actress Kate Hudson.
